Guatemala City, Guatemala– As part of its expansion plans in the market, Premium Restaurants of America, Starbucks operating licensee in Guatemala, today announced more customers can enjoy the Starbucks Experience in new coffeehouses opening in the vibrant cities of Mazatenango and Flores.

In Mazatenango, known as the cultural heart of the Suchitepéquez department and famous for its lively festivals and rich coffee-growing heritage, the new coffeehouse located at Cityplaza Mazate will offer a welcoming space for locals and visitors alike. Meanwhile, in Flores—a city in the Petén department celebrated for its colorful colonial architecture and as the gateway to the ancient Maya ruins of Tikal—the new Starbucks Petén coffeehouse located in front of the Mundo Maya Airport will provide a unique spot to relax and connect while exploring one of Guatemala’s most iconic destinations.

Starbucks designs its coffeehouses to enhance the human connection made over a cup of coffee and to reflect the communities it serves. Starbucks Mazatenango, opening on December 12, is a drive-thru location that features a warm and inviting design inspired by local culture, including handcrafted details and textures that celebrate the region’s heritage, as well as cozy seating areas and community-focused spaces that create a welcoming environment for customers to gather. Starbucks Petén, opening on December 20, is a drive-thru location that boasts distinctive design elements inspired by Mayan culture and the essence of Petén, including natural wood finishes, handcrafted details, and open, welcoming spaces that reflect the region’s vibrant culture and natural beauty.

Since Starbucks arrived in Guatemala in 2011, with its first coffeehouse in Guatemala City, it remains committed to its Guatemalan customers. Starbucks, in partnership with Premium Restaurants of America, continues to expand in the market and now operates 25 stores across Guatemala City, Antigua, Escuintla, and Chiquimula with over 450 partners proudly wearing the green apron. With the two new coffeehouse openings in Mazatenango and Petén, Starbucks Guatemala will be generating more than 100 additional jobs.

“We are thrilled to continue expanding Starbucks presence in Guatemala with the opening of our new stores in Flores and Mazatenango,” said Otto Urquilla, country manager of Starbucks Guatemala. “This milestone reflects our commitment to creating meaningful experiences, fostering human connection, and positively contributing to the communities we serve. We look forward to welcoming customers and becoming part of daily life for both residents and visitors of Mazatenango and Petén.”

Commitment to Local Farmers and Communities

Starbucks provides comprehensive farmer support in Guatemala, as it does globally, paying premiums for high-quality coffee and participation in its Coffee Farmer and Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices program. Guatemala has long been a key origin for Starbucks, with deep-rooted relationships with growers and coffees featured in its portfolio since the company’s earliest days, enjoyed by customers worldwide. This commitment is reinforced by the Starbucks Farmer Support Center in Guatemala City, established in 2006, which provides agronomy expertise and resources to help farmers improve quality, productivity, and sustainability.

Starbucks is expanding its coffee innovation network in Central America to advance climate-resilient research and support farmer profitability. In Guatemala, the Valley of Volcanoes farm will pioneer sustainable solutions for volcanic microclimates, complemented by agronomy initiatives such as distributing 100 million climate-tolerant coffee trees across the region by 2025.

Additionally, Starbucks and the World Food Program USA have partnered to support a World Food Programme initiative to improve the resilience, food security, and nutrition of coffee-growing communities in Guatemala, connected to Starbucks supply chain. The two-year program focused on food security will help 600 households – about 3,000 people – diversify family incomes and enhance access to nutritious food, with a strong focus on indigenous women and children. Through tailored, hands-on training, participants will gain vital entrepreneurial skills to expand business opportunities, strengthen agricultural value chains, and promote healthy lifestyles in their communities.

Starbucks is committed to supporting the communities it serves and recently announced a Global Community Impact Grant from The Starbucks Foundation to United Way Guatemala to strengthen food security and access to safe water for 100 families in Sacatepéquez. Furthermore, through Origin Grants , The Starbucks Foundation supports nonprofit organizations including Wakami Foundation, World Neighbors and Mercy Corps to promote economic opportunities, advance leadership and increase access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene for women, their families and communities across Guatemala’s coffee-growing communities. Starbucks Guatemala partners have also helped to install four AquaTowers in partnership with Planet Water Foundation and The Starbucks Foundation to expand access to clean, safe drinking water for communities across Guatemala.

Designing for Impact

Starbucks design philosophy is driven by its commitment to local relevancy, environmental sustainability,  and pushing to bring bold and innovative spaces to its customers.

Starbucks Mazatenango showcases two murals by local artist Alex Quitanilla (Leex): one outside celebrating the region’s Carnival with vibrant masks and a central deer motif (a symbol deeply rooted in local customs), and another inside depicting sugarcane fields tied to the community’s agricultural heritage. Complemented by handcrafted macramés by José Luis Nucamendi Fajardo using traditional techniques, these elements create an authentic visual narrative that honors Mazatenango’s culture and environment.

The new Starbucks Petén coffeehouse brings coffee and culture together through more macramés by Fajardo as well as murals and design pieces that visually narrate stories inspired by the Mayan worldview, Petén’s biodiversity, and the deep connection between coffee and the land. The lighting was carefully curated to create a warm and relaxing atmosphere, a welcoming space for both locals and travelers to pause and recharge before or after exploring the region.

As part of Starbucks commitment to sustainability, the stores incorporate locally sourced materials and furnishings. Both locations were developed under the Starbucks Greener Stores framework and include high-efficiency equipment, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and sustainable practices such as For-Here-Ware and Grounds for Your Garden — all designed to reduce environmental impact and contribute positively to the communities we serve.

Starbucks Mazatenango is located at Kilometer 162.5, Carretera al Pacífico, within CITY PLAZA MAZATE, Freestanding Unit No. 4, Mazatenango, Suchitepéquez, and will welcome customers from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Starbucks Petén is located in City Plaza Petén – Carretera CA-13 Km. 477, Ciudad Satélite, across from Mundo Maya Airport, Santa Elena, Flores, Petén, and will operate from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
