Starbucks Hosts 19th Annual Edition of Don’t Let It Fall Initiative to Support Local Coffee Farmers
San Juan, Puerto Rico – Starbucks, operated by Baristas del Caribe in Puerto Rico, recently celebrated the 19th edition of its “Don’t Let it Fall” (“No lo Dejes Caer”) initiative, reaffirming its commitment to supporting local coffee farmers. This movement, led by Starbucks partners (employees), aims to reduce the waste of ripe coffee cherries by collecting them directly at the farms during harvest season.
This year, 41 partners volunteered their time to visit Hacienda Encantos, located in Jayuya, on the northern slope of Cerro Punta, Puerto Rico’s tallest mountain. During their visit, the partners collected approximately 126 pounds of ripe coffee cherries, equivalent to 4.5 almuds, helping the farm maximize its production.
“The ‘Don’t Let It Fall’ initiative embodies our commitment to Puerto Rico’s coffee-growing community. By working together, we not only help preserve the island’s coffee heritage but also support the farmers who make enjoying an exceptional coffee possible,” said Idis Ortiz López, general manager of Starbucks Puerto Rico.
Hacienda Encantos spans 124 acres, with 35 acres dedicated exclusively to coffee production. The farm focuses on Arabica coffee varieties, including Marsellesa, Obata, and Limaní. All harvested coffee is processed on-site, ensuring quality and sustainability.
In addition to harvesting, partners enjoyed a special coffee tasting prepared using Chemex and Espresso brewing methods, enriching their experience with the coffee journey from bean to cup.
Through “Don’t Let It Fall”, Starbucks continues to reinforce its goal to contribute to the sustainable development of the local coffee industry, showcasing that coffee is more than just a beverage; it’s a connection between the land, the community, and a shared passion for excellence.
