Starbucks Top 4 Coffeehouses Redefining the Southeast Mexico Experience

As customers plan their summer getaways, destinations like Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum continue to strengthen their role as strategic locations for Starbucks, showcasing the commitment to sustainability, community, and Mexican talent.  In 2025, Starbucks Mexico projects expanding to over 200 stores in states with strong tourism appeal, as part of its expansion strategy and commitment to regional economic development.

Mexico City – In one of the most important tourist corridors in the world, Starbucks Mexico, operated by Alsea, reinforces its commitment to sustainability, local identity, and the development of its more than 1,100 partners (employees) in the southeast region through its strategic presence in key destinations such as Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

“Southeastern Mexico inspires us with its natural, cultural, and human richness. At Starbucks Mexico, we want every store in the region to be more than just a meeting place and to reflect our commitment to the development of local communities and talent. Every space we open is an opportunity to make a positive impact,” said Francisco Tosso, general manager of Starbucks at Alsea.

Today, the southeast region of the market is home to 73 coffeehouses – each a reflection of Starbucks global commitment to operate 10,000 sustainable stores worldwide by 2025. Across this dynamic and culturally rich corridor, four locations are doing more than serving coffee—they are setting a new standard. These are spaces where thoughtful design meets local pride, where community connection is nurtured, and where environmental stewardship is embedded in every detail.

Discover Starbucks Anah, a New Icon in Playa del Carmen

Located in one of the fastest-growing areas of Fifth Avenue, the Starbucks Anah store in Playa del Carmen marks a key milestone in the brand’s continued expansion in Southeast Mexico. Opened in 2025, this store not only offers an ideal space to enjoy high-quality beverages, but also symbolizes Starbucks commitment to the local community, job creation, and meaningful experiences. With a contemporary design that reflects the essence of the Riviera Maya, Starbucks Anah aims to inspire human connection through hospitality, local culture, and a strong bond with its surroundings.

Playa del Carmen: A flagship coffeehouse that honors local culture and the environment

Located in the heart of Fifth Avenue, the upcoming Starbucks in Playa del Carmen will serve as a meeting point between a cosmopolitan vision and the most representative cultural and natural elements of the region. More than 90 percent of the furniture was crafted in Mexico, showcasing local craftsmanship and reducing the environmental footprint.

A highlight of the space is a custom art installation by local artist Elena Caltz, a visual artist from Cancún known for her murals, illustrations, and ceramics that explore the connection between the body, spirit, and nature. Her work is rooted in sustainability, native materials, and organic forms, often inspired by dreams, emotions, and the natural world. The piece she created for this store brings to life the principles that guide Starbucks store design—blending environmental awareness with artistic expression.

This coffeehouse is an invitation for both tourists and locals to reconnect with the environment, celebrate local culture, and consume responsibly. This store also stands out as the 154th location in the market designed under sustainable building standards reflecting Starbucks continued progress toward more environmentally respectful operations.

Cancun, Plaza Village: Modernity, warmth, and a culture of caring for partners

Since early 2024, Starbucks has operated a stand-alone Drive-Thru coffeehouse at Plaza Village in Cancún, with a Drive-Thru format that meets the needs of diverse and constantly moving costumers. Its two-level design combines functionality and warmth, incorporating local materials such as chukum and handcrafted pieces that evoke the Mayan cultural roots.

The store also reinforces the company’s commitment to inclusion by offering dedicated positions for senior adults and employing a team made up of over 70 percent women—reflecting Starbucks core values of equity.

Tulum: Design in harmony with nature

Recognized for its exemplary design and sustainability practices, Ahau Tulum has become an international benchmark for sustainable architecture. Built with limestone, certified bamboo columns, and native vegetation, this coffeehouse has been designed to operate in harmony with the surrounding jungle, respecting and preserving the natural elements of its environment.

It creates opportunities for local employment with a multigenerational approach, and promotes practices such as composting, recycling, and environmental education, making it a place where coffee is enjoyed with purpose.

Data That Tells a Bigger Story

  • In 2025, Starbucks Mexico projects expanding to over 200 stores in states with strong tourism appeal, as part of its expansion strategy and commitment to regional economic development.
  • Through its sustainability programs, the brand has avoided the use of more than 5 million disposable cups in the market in 2024.
  • In collaboration with non-government organizations, the company has implemented close to 20 social impact projects in southeastern communities—such as the restoration of public gardens, cleaning of cenotes and beaches, and the delivery and donation of food and coffee to hospitals, directly impacting coffee-growing families, local artisans, and partners.

A Brand That Adapts, Grows, and Connects

Starbucks operations in southeastern Mexico reflect its ability to adapt to diverse contexts without losing sight of its essence: creating spaces where coffee serves as a bridge for human connection, professional development, and environmental awareness.

“Now more than ever, we understand that each coffeehouse can be a catalyst for positive impact. At Starbucks Mexico, we are committed to ensuring that every experience in our spaces leaves a meaningful mark on people, our communities, and the environment we share,” added Sarai Jiménez, director of Store Development and Brand Reputation at Starbucks Mexico.
