Starbucks Peru and Planet Water Foundation Join Forces to Provide Safe Water to Vulnerable Communities in Ventanilla
- The partnership between The Starbucks Foundation and Planet Water Foundation will bring clean water to up to 1,800 people at IEI No. 150 School in the Ventanilla district of Lima.
- The project builds on a 13-year partnership between The Starbucks Foundation and Planet Water Foundation to deliver clean water to thirteen Starbucks markets.
Lima, Peru — As part of its commitment to contribute positively to the communities it serves, Starbucks Peru – managed by licensed retail operator Delosi – and The Starbucks Foundation partnered with Planet Water Foundation to install a new AquaTower, a facility that includes a filtration system and handwashing stations, at the IEI No. 150 Mirador de Jesús Primary School, located in the Ventanilla district of Lima. This initiative will provide daily access to safe drinking water for up to 1,800 people, benefiting students, teachers, and local residents.
Starbucks Peru partners (employees) worked to build the tower under the direction of Planet Water Foundation. Volunteers also conducted educational workshops on health and hygiene, teaching children the importance of handwashing and maintaining healthy habits to prevent diseases. Through interactive activities, students explored the germ cycle and essential hygiene practices, empowering them to maintain and enhance their well-being.
In Peru, less than 45% of schools have access to drinking water, affecting the health and academic performance of over 1.8 million students, according to data from the Ministry of Education (Minedu, 2024). The critical need for adequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in schools underscores the importance of projects like the one led by The Starbucks Foundation and Planet Water Foundation, which aims to guarantee these fundamental rights for the most vulnerable communities.
Cristel Delgado, Brand Manager at Starbucks Peru, commented: "At Starbucks, we are committed to the well-being of the communities where we operate. This project not only improves access to safe drinking water, but it also reinforces our commitment to sustainable social impact."
