Starbucks is celebrating the rich tradition of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) with a new and exclusive collection of beautifully designed tumblers, cups and mugs available to customers worldwide. The drinkware honors the cultural heritage and enduring spirit of this cherished holiday, while adding a touch of festive flair to any beverage.

Día de Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a holiday that originated primarily in Mexico and is now celebrated around the world, to honor the memories of loved ones who have passed away. Each region and community add their unique customs to the festivities.

“Día de Muertos has become a truly global celebration,” says Mariana Flores Rios, Starbucks senior marketing manager for Latin America who has overseen the production of Starbucks Día de Muertos merchandise since the merchandise line was introduced in 2019. “With its growing popularity, the demand for our limited-edition drinkware has expanded across the world. It is so exciting to see customers around the world celebrate this beautiful tradition with pieces that honor its rich heritage and artistry.”

This year’s collection draws inspiration from traditional sugar skulls, which represent the spirit of the departed. They also feature alebrijes – brightly colored, mystical creatures believed to act as spiritual guides that accompany souls on their journey after death.

Eduardo (left) and Arturo from Starbucks Mexico Brand Communications team created the designs for in the U.S., Canada and Latin America and Caribbean markets. The collection celebrates the artistry of local craftsmanship, bringing to life the vibrant patterns and colors that have long been part of Día de Muertos festivities.

“Día de Muertos is ultimately a joyous celebration, filled with music, dance, and radiant colors, upholding the belief that death is not the end, but a natural part of the human experience,” added Flores Rios. “This tradition serves as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of all people and the enduring power of cultural heritage.”
