but are united in their commitment to improving their communities with the support of The Starbucks Foundation. <\/h6>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a mother\u2019s sacrifice that was nearly unfathomable. In order to save her children, Cecilia Valderrama G\u00f3mez knew she would have to send them away. She and her husband and four children lived in El Escobal, a rural area in Colombia that was controlled for 50 years by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/uploads\/2019\/03\/SBX030419-IWD-Cecilia-Colombia-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-71005\" \/><figcaption> Cecilia Valderrama G\u00f3mez <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause of the conflict, people were living in fear,\u201d she\nsaid. \u201cThere was a lot of fear in doing just basic activities. We couldn\u2019t dare\ntry to leave the area.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FARC was known to recruit young children and use them as\nrunners. So, when Valderrama G\u00f3mez\u2019s children were between 9 and 13, she sent\nthree of them to stay with family in a safer area where they could go to school\nand wouldn\u2019t be taken by the FARC.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t want them to be at risk,\u201d she said. Years passed,\nand it wasn\u2019t until the conflict ended two years ago that she saw them again. Her\nson who wasn\u2019t able to go with the others ended up being conscripted by the\nFARC and later went to jail.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s overwhelming recalling all that she went through living\nin the shadow of the FARC, she said. Instead, she chooses to focus on the\npresent and work toward the future. Today, \u201cI\u2019m happy and hopeful,\u201d she said. \u201cI\nhave always wanted to help others fight for a better life and to help others\nget ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Valderrama G\u00f3mez, 52, is doing exactly that as president of the Escobal\nWomen\u2019s Association, an organization comprised of 16 women, dedicated to improving\nconditions for the community after the conflict. About half of the families in\nher community don\u2019t have basic sanitation services. Many don\u2019t have bathrooms. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s now starting to change due to help from a $500,000 grant to\nLutheran World Relief from The Starbucks Foundation, which is targeted toward\nimproving sanitation and access to clean water and also creating greater\neconomic opportunity for women in coffee communities in Tolima, Colombia. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, The Starbucks Foundation announced a goal of empowering\n250,000 women and girls by 2025 in communities where coffee, tea, and cocoa is\ngrown. They raise bees and sell the honey locally, providing an income\nfor their families while working toward a goal of being able to sell their\nhoney in the larger cities and grow their customer base. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are also about to use those same organizational skills to\nhelp facilitate the building of more toilets in her community. Women from her\ngroup will meet with families in the area to assess the need. And then they\u2019ll coordinate\ngetting the supplies there via a two-hour journey by donkey.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Valderrama G\u00f3mez knows that better sanitation means less sickness\nand disease. People get sick if the water is contaminated. The closest hospital\nis miles away. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you have better sanitation, you have better health,\u201d she said.\n\u201cMy hope is to see new projects continue and for the community to really grow,\nnot just in prosperity but in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s the hope of The Starbucks Foundation too, said Tenpenny.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWomen have an instinct to pay it forward,\u201d she said.  In honor of International Women\u2019s Day on March 8, meet some of the other women who are working to change the world, one community at a time.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"> Manjula Kahar, India  <\/h3>\n<\/body>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/uploads\/2019\/03\/SBX030419-IWD-Manjula-Kahar-India-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-71009\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 3 p.m. each afternoon, about 120 children arrive at Majula\nKahar\u2019s home in Assam, India, for her after-school education program. For the\nnext two hours, Kahar teaches them how to read and write. Though Kahar comes\nfrom modest means, she does it without pay, committed to helping the children\nhave opportunities she didn\u2019t growing up. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like them, Kahar, now 26, grew up on the Moran Tea Estate, the\ndaughter of a tea picker. She attended the local government school when she was\na girl, especially unusual for young girls in the region. Due to limited access\nto school and lack of resources, many children on tea estates who do attend\nschool drop out before high school without being able to read, making\naspirations and economic opportunities nearly impossible.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0\u201cThe after-school program that these children\nare a part of is for lower-income groups,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel change will come\nwhen it is communicated that education is a largest priority. I want the\ncommunity to be educated and to value education.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many tea communities,\neducation is prioritized for boys, with girls being expected to focus on\nhousehold chores, she said. But Kahar\u2019s mother, a tea picker whom she calls the\ncore of the family, always placed value on education. She encouraged all three\nof her children to continue school, even as Kahar saw many\nof her friends drop out and get married early. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kahar went through a training program to learn how to teach\nchildren as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starbucks.com\/responsibility\/sourcing\/tea\" class=\"is-external-link\" aria-describedby=\"external-link-description\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mercy Corps\u2019 Community Health and Advancement Initiative (CHAI)<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" height=\"13\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 13\" width=\"13\">\n\t<path d=\"M13 .43v3.9a.43.43 0 1 1-.87 0V1.48l-6.19 6.2a.43.43 0 0 1-.61 0 .43.43 0 0 1 0-.62l6.2-6.2H8.66a.43.43 0 1 1 0-.86h3.9c.24 0 .43.2.43.43ZM11.27 11.7V6.5a.43.43 0 1 0-.87 0v5.2c0 .24-.2.43-.43.43H1.3a.43.43 0 0 1-.43-.43V3.03c0-.24.2-.43.43-.43h5.2a.43.43 0 1 0 0-.87H1.3c-.72 0-1.3.59-1.3 1.3v8.67c0 .72.58 1.3 1.3 1.3h8.67c.71 0 1.3-.58 1.3-1.3Z\" fill=\"currentColor\"><\/path>\n<\/svg><\/a>, supported since 2003 by \u00a0The Starbucks Foundation. Today she is earning\nher Bachelor of Arts degree at Moran College\nto advance access to education for children in her community.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI always had the desire to be a teacher,\u201d she said. \u201cEducation\nwas not a priority on tea estates growing up, and after getting training, I began teaching kids in the\ncommunity. I quickly saw, after three or four months, an improvement in\nstudents. They could now recognize the alphabet and write short sentences. One\nstudent even began to sing stories in the classroom to friends.\u00a0 This is the inspiration I see in schools. I\nam happy that I can contribute to my community and society.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of students who come\nto Kahar\u2019s classes continues to grow. Many, who are eager for the chance to\nlearn, are bringing their friends. She finds room for them all.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Education, she knows, is the key\nto unlocking a better life, particularly for girls.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to see women and girls\nuplifted in parts of the world where they are deprived of education,\u201d she said.\n\u201cI hope one day the woman will rise and be given importance in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After she graduates from college,\nshe wants to be a school teacher, which she sees as her path to changing the\nworld. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"> Nande Anggun, Indonesia <\/h3>\n<\/body>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/uploads\/2019\/03\/SBX030419-IWD-Nande-Anggun-Indonesia-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-71013\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s early morning and Nande Anggun, 48, has not been to bed yet.\nAs a midwife, she\u2019s accustomed to being up at all hours at the side of women\nwho need her. On this day last week, she\u2019s just helped deliver a baby girl \u2013\npart of the next generation of women in the Indonesian community that Anggun\nhas devoted her life to helping empower.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to being a midwife for the last 26 years, she also\nworks with young children and the elderly, tends to her farm of 200 coffee\ntrees and is also the treasurer of Pembianaan Kesejahteraan Keluarga (PKK), a\nfamily welfare organization led by women focused on helping develop women\u2019s\nleadership, governance, management, strategic planning and more in their\nvillages. It\u2019s rare for her to get more than six hours of sleep a night, but\nit\u2019s worth it, she says, because she knows that this is how change happens.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m very proud to participate in community activities because I\nlook for how the women in my community can have a better life,\u201d she said, as\nshe sat in the lobby of her local health clinic. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018 Lutheran World Relief, which works with PKK, was given a\nthree-year grant from The Starbucks Foundation totaling $500,000 to support\nwomen-led community health and hygiene programs for 2,100 households in\nIndonesian coffee-producing villages. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PKK is leading a series of workshops where women in the community can\ndiscuss various topics about health and family. The group is focused on helping\nwomen build, and then advocate, for their own agendas in their lives and\ncommunities. Often, she said, the weight of caring for the family and making\nsure bills are paid falls to women, even when they are working outside the\nhome. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWomen are considered the responsible person for running a\nfamily,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She recently led a workshop focused on the roles of women and men\nin families \u2013 and how women can navigate conversations with their husbands\nabout being more involved as fathers and seeing their wives as equals. It\nsparked a conversation with Anggun\u2019s own husband, whom she said doesn\u2019t always\nunderstand why she is so busy volunteering her time. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She puts her hand to her heart as she talks about what matters \u2013\nshe wants to make things better for those who are coming behind her. Women\ncoming together can be powerful, she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not always just about gaining\nnew knowledge, but other women might be thinking about the same things,\u201d she\nsaid. That is how change begins.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her face lights up as she talks about her own children, a\n25-year-old daughter and her 21-year-old son. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a mother, I always hope my daughter can hope she has a better\nlife than me. I hope she and her husband can discuss everything about the\nfamily,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the community workshops, part of the grant is\nfocused toward improving sanitation and access to clean water. Women who\nvolunteer with PKK will be trained to help educate people about better\nsanitation. Grant dollars will help fund the construction of 18 communal water\nand sanitation facilities in five communities, featuring a shower, toilet, sink\nand water storage tank. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Anggun has running water at her house, many in her village\ndon\u2019t. When she goes to visit friends who only have latrines and no water, she\nworries for them, she said. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better health, better sanitation and women who are truly supported\nin their communities are the goals that drive her, she said. \u201cWhen I grow old\nand look back, I hope that people will remember the work I\u2019ve done and the love\nand hope I have for people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just then, someone approaches and Anggun excuses herself. A woman\nin labor needs her. Another baby, part of the next generation in her community,\nwas about to be born. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Luz Ruiz Salazar contributed to this story.
