class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">In 2005, a few months after graduating from architecture school in the Dominican Republic, Gianny Sanchez was working at a job designing houses. But she felt uninspired, and the pay wasn\u2019t enough to be financially independent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI just started questioning myself,\u201d she remembers thinking. \u201cI wanted to be part of something bigger than me and further develop myself. I made the decision one Monday sitting at my desk, and the next Monday I was on a plane flying to New Jersey.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/uploads\/2020\/09\/SBX20200914-LatinxHeritageMonth-Gianny-Sanchez-Hero-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Gianny Sanchez\" class=\"wp-image-112603\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption>Gianny Sanchez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Fifteen years later \u2013 after managing the design and construction of duty-free stores for an international makeup company, finishing two master\u2019s degrees in the U.S. and giving birth to her son \u2013 Sanchez earlier this year completed a remarkable homecoming. She is the project development manager who helped bring the very first Starbucks store to the D.R. It opened mid-May in the capital, Santo Domingo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first store in my country,\u201d Sanchez says. \u201cIt was a very emotional moment for me, especially when I saw that first bag of Dominican coffee for Starbucks.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">This year, during Latinx Heritage Month, Starbucks is proud to honor the rich coffee cultures of Latin America and the stories of our partners who celebrate them still, in ways new and old, stories of families and traditions, stories of leaving home and coming back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">For Sanchez, her relationship with coffee started when she was little. Every summer, her parents would send her off from the city to experience the country life at her grandmother\u2019s house in La Vega, in the northern more mountainous part of the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<div\n\tclass=\"sbux-media-with-text wp-block-sbux-media-with-text\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"sbux-media-with-text__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"sbux-media-with-text__content content-flow\">\n\t\t<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">u003cpu003eu201cThe first store in my countryu2026 It was a very emotional moment for me, especially when I saw that first bag of Dominican coffee for Starbucks.u201du003c\/pu003eu003cpu003eu2013 Giannyu003c\/pu003e<\/p><\/body>\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">There, she played with her cousins \u2013 sometimes as many as 10 kids stayed the summer \u2013 embracing nature and learning about the land. On her grandmother\u2019s property, the family grew coffee and cacao. When it was about to rain, she remembers helping pick up the coffee cherries and cacao beans that were sun drying on the big concrete platform in the backyard.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">The platform was attached to an outdoor kitchen, and had a wood-burning stove in the middle called a fog\u00f3n, on which the family would roast coffee during the day. Afterwards, it was ground by hand in a pilon, or mortar and pestle, and then brewed in a cloth strainer. At night, the kids would huddle together on the platform, turn off the lights and tell each other scary stories, the smell of coffee always lingering close by.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s one of the best memories I have,\u201d Sanchez says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Sanchez, 37, grew up drinking coffee brewed in a <em>greca<\/em>, a metal stovetop pot powered by steam \u2013 resulting in coffee that\u2019s somewhere between an espresso and a drip. Sanchez says most Dominicans prefer their coffee in small cups \u2013 black, full of sugar and accompanied by toast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Although she lives in Miami now, when Sanchez reminisces about home, she thinks about food and music \u2013 the taste of sancocho, a Dominican meat and vegetable stew, and the rhythms of bachata and merengue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI miss the simplicity of life,\u201d she says. \u201cPeople work very hard there, but there\u2019s always time to enjoy, to spend time with friends.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Starbucks in the D.R. is now limited to delivery and pickup only, but Sanchez looks forward to the day it will be \u201cflooded with people\u201d who will walk inside and savor the store\u2019s tribute to the country\u2019s indigenous plants and birds, the warm tones and natural materials, the feminine touch that honors strong Caribbean women.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was bittersweet of course, leaving my country,\u201d Sanchez says. \u201cBut for me, being able to open Starbucks there, I get to see my family, and to share this experience with them. Over the last few years, she\u2019s shared more and more of her coffee creations with that group, as well as at store tasting events and corporate meetings.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Among her favorites:<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Horchata cold brew, with flavors of sweet rice and milk.\u00a0<\/li><li>Coffee pressed with water that\u2019s been infused for 24 hours with cinnamon sticks and sugar.\u00a0<\/li><li>Tres Leches coffee Jell-O, inspired by Asian boba tea.\u00a0<\/li><li>Chocolate coffee atole, a hot corn-based drink with Meso-American roots.\u00a0<\/li><li>Hibiscus tea with a splash of Guatemalan coffee to bring out more flavor.\u00a0<\/li><li>Homemade Mexican Chiapas ice cream with hazelnut coffee brownies.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI just saw it as a challenge, mixing cultures together, incorporating it with my roots,\u201d Salgado says. \u201cWhen I think of coffee, I think of family. That\u2019s how I feel when I\u2019m making my creations. It brings me a lot of joy to do things like that and to see people\u2019s reactions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">She wouldn\u2019t have gone down this path had it not been for her sister, Sarah, 31, a Starbucks store manager at a different store in the same district. She\u2019s the one who convinced Esther to move to Virginia from Oregon, where they were born and raised, and introduced her to Starbucks five years ago. She\u2019d been working for years at a company that provided phone services for prison inmates and detainees. She started off as a customer service representative but taught herself computer languages and ended up coding and programming at the company\u2019s command center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Sarah Salgado is equally passionate about coffee, but in a different way. She\u2019s been with Starbucks for 13 years, starting as a barista and managing the Reserve store in Washington D.C. before moving to her current store in Virginia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Sarah Salgado says she became aware of coffee\u2019s role early on, especially during big family gatherings. At the end of the night, as the party wound down, coffee would be brewed in a big pan, Mexican sweet bread would appear at the table and one of the uncles would pass a small cup to each of the kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt could be the roughest day, the hardest working day, the most stressful day,\u201d Sarah Salgado says. \u201cBut having that cup of coffee, eating that bread, that family gathering, reminiscing, those were some really good times. At the end of the day, we just came together and talked. That\u2019s coffee, that\u2019s what it is, that\u2019s what we do. Thatu2019s coffee, thatu2019s what it is, thatu2019s what we do.u0022u003c\/pu003eu003cpu003eu2013 Sarahu003c\/pu003e<\/p><\/body>\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, Sarah Salgado had the opportunity to visit Iguala, a small farming community in the Mexican state of Guerrero, where her father was born. There was only one little market in town, and no Wi-Fi. Roosters woke her up in the morning. It was exciting to see her father\u2019s roots, her roots too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t easy growing up for him. He had to make a lot of big decisions as a young man,\u201d Sarah Salgado says. \u201cBut he was able to make it. I\u2019m grateful for everything he\u2019s given us. I get to be able to tell his story too.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/uploads\/2020\/09\/LatinxHeritageMonth-candies.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-112687\" width=\"140\" height=\"81\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<body><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018The smell of home\u2019\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Narita Oliveira learned how to make cafezinho \u2013 \u201clittle coffee\u201d in Portuguese \u2013 from her grandmother, Vovo Maria. For every cup of water, she\u2019d use two spoons of sugar and two spoons of coffee. She\u2019d dissolve the sugar first and put the coffee grounds in the water just before it would start to boil. Take off the heat, wait a while, then pour through a cloth strainer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have her recipe, but I never met her. She died the year I was born,\u201d says Oliveira, 41, a Starbucks partner resources manager based in Miami, who supports the Latin American Caribbean market. \u201cBut the recipe lives on. Everyone in the family still does it that same way.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/uploads\/2020\/09\/SBX20200914-LatinxHeritageMonth-Narita-Oliveira-Hero-685x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Narita Oliveira\" class=\"wp-image-112607\" width=\"685\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption>Narita Oliveira<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Brazil is the number one coffee exporter in the world, and Oliveira grew up in Minas Gerais, a state that produces about half the country\u2019s coffee product. For Oliveira, memories of home mean memories of the big kitchen. She and her two older sisters would sit on the floor while her mom was cooking \u2013 talking, helping, having fun.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Every afternoon, the coffee would be served, in small espresso-style cups, often with cheese bread, little sweet chocolate treats called brigadeiros and queijo meia-cura, a semisoft local farm cheese.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA cousin arrives, then an auntie arrives, then an uncle arrives,\u201d Oliveira remembers. \u201cNobody arranged that meeting, but everybody knows that there\u2019s going to be fresh coffee around 4:30 or 5. It\u2019s very rare to have a coffee alone, while walking on the street, like they do in the U.S. Usually, you sit for half an hour, talking with family and friends.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Oliveira left home when she was 25 years old, to work in S\u00e3o Paulo and seek out more opportunities. She worked her way up in human resources, eventually running the online commerce division for a national grocery chain before joining Starbucks, where she was in charge of human resources for the Brazilian market. In 2018, she moved to the U.S. with her husband Jorge and expanded her learnings \u2013 a new set of labor laws, the different ways that American companies interviewed and hired, exposure to more diversity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<div\n\tclass=\"sbux-media-with-text has-image-position-end wp-block-sbux-media-with-text\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"sbux-media-with-text__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"sbux-media-with-text__content content-flow\">\n\t\t<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">u003cpu003eu201cIt wasnu2019t easy, and itu2019s not easy, but to think about what my mom and dad built for us, and the sacrifices they made for us, here I am.
