Pachecos, figuring out how to make it work really\ndidn\u2019t feel like a choice. <\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven years ago, an outbreak of coffee rust began destroying\ncrops across Central America.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLeaf rust entered the country of Guatemala in the year\n2012,\u201d says Kevin Pacheco, a coffee farmer in the Jalapa region. \u201cBefore the\nrust appeared, we had better coffee plantations, more vigorous. So, it is a big\nproblem.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen there is no coffee, there is no business,\u201d says Catalina Pacheco, 72, a second-generation coffee farmer. \u201cIt is what gives life to Guatemala.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Catalina is Kevin\u2019s grandmother. Coffee farming is the family business. So, \u201cwe have, over time, been learning,\u201d says Kevin, 22.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Catalina says that she worked in coffee from the time she\nwas young and always wanted to be \u201ca real coffee owner.\u201d She and her husband,\nCarlos Lima, bought the 12.5-hectare coffee farm that Kevin now farms.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI learned how to work from them,\u201d says Kevin.<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rust outbreak could have derailed the dream.
