There, she manages the \u201ccore collection\u201d \u2013 617 different coffee hybrids and varietals, available for free to any coffee farmer through the Starbucks open-source agronomy program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, about 3 million coffee seeds per year are distributed from the core collection to farmers in Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica \u2013 whether they sell to Starbucks or not.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 230 hybrids in the core collection are being newly evaluated. Bogantes is part of a research and development team trying to help find the strongest and best among them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n\n<div data-version=\"2022.04.12.002\" class=\"wp-block-gallery is-style-default columns-3 wp-block-gallery-1\"><figure class=\"wp-block-gallery alignfull has-nested-images columns-default is-style-default is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"167015\" src=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SBX20230308-IWD-Sara-Bogantes-014-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-167015\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"167011\" src=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SBX20230308-IWD-Sara-Bogantes-010-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-167011\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"167007\" src=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SBX20230308-IWD-Sara-Bogantes-001-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-167007\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They send leaf clippings for analysis to a laboratory in Sweden, to get early genetic clues about which are more resistant to coffee rust and anthracnose, fungal diseases that kill coffee plants. They run tests to see how the plants process and absorb nutrients, physically examine root systems and leaf structures, and taste early samples from those producing coffee cherries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the team identifies those that show the most promise, Bogantes works with labs on making micro-cuttings and tissue cultures, techniques which can speed up propagation and distribution. Stronger plants in the ground, faster, means more income for farmers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also works closely with Carlos Mario Rodriguez, Starbucks head of global research and development, as part of the overall Farmer Support Center mission to directly train farmers and set up model farms based on <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/press\/2020\/cafe-practices-starbucks-approach-to-ethically-sourcing-coffee\/\" class=\"is-external-link\" aria-describedby=\"external-link-description\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C.A.F.E. practices<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" height=\"13\" viewBox=\"0 0 13 13\" width=\"13\">\n\t<path d=\"M13 .43v3.9a.43.43 0 1 1-.87 0V1.48l-6.19 6.2a.43.43 0 0 1-.61 0 .43.43 0 0 1 0-.62l6.2-6.2H8.66a.43.43 0 1 1 0-.86h3.9c.24 0 .43.2.43.43ZM11.27 11.7V6.5a.43.43 0 1 0-.87 0v5.2c0 .24-.2.43-.43.43H1.3a.43.43 0 0 1-.43-.43V3.03c0-.24.2-.43.43-.43h5.2a.43.43 0 1 0 0-.87H1.3c-.72 0-1.3.59-1.3 1.3v8.67c0 .72.58 1.3 1.3 1.3h8.67c.71 0 1.3-.58 1.3-1.3Z\" fill=\"currentColor\"><\/path>\n<\/svg><\/a> around ethical sourcing and sustainability, where all this knowledge can be practically disseminated, and farmers can see for themselves how to create optimal conditions on their own farms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/uploads\/2023\/03\/SBX20230308-IWD-Sara-Bogantes-025-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-167023\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Starbucks agronomist Sara Bogantes and agronomist Carlos Mario at Hacienda Alsacia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe&#8217;s very good with teaching farmers, guiding them, because of the experience that she has,\u201d Rodriguez says. \u201cHaving a young woman supporting and interacting with farmers is very important, and also is encouraging many young people to just keep working in coffee.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bogantes, 35, grew up on her family\u2019s coffee farm in nearby San Isidro de Alajuela. She was deeply impacted when an epidemic of coffee rust, in 2014, killed off almost all her family\u2019s coffee trees. She was in the U.S. at the time, working at an internship, when she received the urgent phone call.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI remember the weather was very cloudy. The day was so dark. It\u2019s raining, cold,\u201d she says, recalling the day she arrived back home. \u201cAnd when I went to the coffee plantation, I remember looking at all the coffee trees, completely destroyed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou need to control your emotions because your parents are completely destroyed, and you need to give them support. You are feeling completely destroyed too, inside, but you need to be optimistic because you need to be the person to be the light.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That, and a similar moment several years later in Puerto Rico, after she saw how Hurricanes Maria and Irma almost wiped out the country\u2019s coffee industry, have underscored for Bogantes the urgency of researching and finding solutions. It\u2019s been a theme her entire life, from her early internships in Brazil and the U.S. to her more recent work with nonprofits like World Coffee Research and TechnoServe. She joined Starbucks two years ago.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body>\n\n<body><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNothing makes me feel happier than seeing the faces of the coffee producers smile, transmitting hope and supporting them in believing that there is a future in coffee,\u201d Bogantes says. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m living my dreams, but if we want to ensure coffee for the next 50 years, we don\u2019t have that much time.
