Antigua, Guatemala – Starbucks today announced it is celebrating a milestone in its commitment to Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC): opening its 1,500th store in the region and its first café in the iconic city of Antigua, Guatemala, to be operated by its business partner Premium Restaurants of America (PRA). Coinciding with Starbucks 20th anniversary of retail presence in the region, the store is designed to honor Antigua’s rich coffee heritage.

Having shared the finest Guatemalan arabica coffee with millions of customers around the world since the company’s founding in 1971, Starbucks has worked for decades with the coffee-growing communities of Guatemala. The opening of the first Starbucks store in Antigua reflects the company’s deep respect and admiration for Guatemala’s coffee, its farmers, and its communities. Building on the company's 50-year history with the city, Antigua became a natural destination for Starbucks to celebrate its 1,500th store.

Starbucks retail operations started in Guatemala in 2011 in partnership with PRA, which currently operates Starbucks stores in Guatemala, Costa Rica and El Salvador. Since then, it has grown to 12 stores in the market, employing more than 200 partners (employees) in Guatemala – including the 25 newest partners located in the city of Antigua.

Creating a unique Starbucks Experience

As Starbucks opens its first store in the iconic city of Antigua, the company is committed to bringing the Starbucks Experience to more customers in locally relevant ways by celebrating local coffee culture and traditions.

This new store will provide customers with high-quality arabica coffee from Guatemala, featuring Guatemala Antigua year-round, as well as a selection of coffees from around the world through Starbucks handcrafted beverages prepared by passionate Starbucks barista partners, using different brewing methods like Pour Over and Chemex, as well as the traditional French Press, among others.

Antigua, a store with an iconic design

Located at the heart of the city and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, the new store was developed as a one-of-a-kind adaptive reuse project. The LAC Starbucks design team, in partnership with PRA, was committed to protecting and preserving the original beauty and history of the building – a private residence dating back to the 1930s – by restoring its architectural features as well as honoring Guatemala’s coffee culture through the unique design of the store and elevated coffee experience for its customers.&nbsp;

Starbucks<a href="https://historias.starbucks.com/en-es/stories/2022/top-5-things-to-see-at-starbucks-new-store-in-antigua-guatemala/"> worked with a range of local artists and designers </a>to capture the artistic, warm and colorful spirit of Antigua. The store also features two murals created by Alvaro Tzaj Yotz, a local painter and muralist from San Juan La Laguna, Sololá. The feature mural displayed next to the bar depicts three women, portrayed as hummingbirds, nurturing a coffee tree and sharing its cherries, representing the natural beauty and past generations of Guatemalan women in the coffee industry. The second mural located in the courtyard showcases a woman in a hand-carved canoe floating in coffee botanicals and local flora. She holds a ceramic pot out of which local birds fly around the courtyard walls, including a Quetzal – the national bird of Guatemala.&nbsp;

Customers can also find the work of Daniela Rivas – an artist who creates distinctive pieces using natural and local materials such as cotton, clay and wood.&nbsp; One of Rivas’ pieces at the store’s main lobby highlights the Volcano Agua – a 3,500m stratovolcano that towers over the city of Antigua.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her second piece hangs in the Lounge Room and features coffee growing at elevation, with the colors representing the coffee plant, blossoms and cherries.&nbsp;

Over 170 customers can enjoy handcrafted Starbucks beverages at the new Antigua café, which boasts three conference rooms and a beautiful inner courtyard with a large green wall, an abundance of local plants, and thoughtful lighting.

Starbucks Commitment to Local Coffee Farmers

Guatemala has always been a special coffee region for Starbucks and the company has long-standing relationships with coffee growers across the country. Coffee from Guatemala and the Antigua region have been a part of the Starbucks portfolio from the company’s beginning, with many customers able to experience these coffees around the world. &nbsp;

Starbucks farmer support in this region, as it is globally, is comprehensive and holistic. In addition to paying premiums for coffee for high-quality standards and participation in its ethical and sustainable sourcing program named <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2020/cafe-practices-starbucks-approach-to-ethically-sourcing-coffee/">Coffee Farmer and Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices</a>, Starbucks also provides coffee farmers with a range of resources. In 2006, the company opened its satellite Farmer Support Center in Guatemala, allowing agronomists and quality experts to work alongside farmers, sharing tools and information to help them increase the productivity and quality of coffee on their farms.

Positive impact in Guatemalan communities

Building on Starbucks commitment to the betterment of all who interact with the brand, the company remains focused on creating a positive impact in Guatemalan communities. Over the past two decades, The Starbucks Foundation has awarded grants to nonprofit organizations to support thriving coffee communities and disaster response initiatives, including the <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2018/starbucks-supports-guatemala-volcano-relief-efforts/">2018 Fuego Volcano eruption</a>.

As part of Starbucks goal to positively <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2022/the-starbucks-foundation-commits-to-uplift-one-million-women-and-girls-in-origin-communities-by-2030/">impact one million women and girls in coffee-, tea-, and cocoa-growing communities by 2030</a>, The Starbucks Foundation is currently supporting grants to&nbsp; Mercy Corps, Wakami Foundation, and World Central Kitchen. These grants are promoting sustainable income generation, gender equity and empowerment, improved health and well-being and safe spaces for personal growth. In addition, the Foundation recently collaborated with PRA to invest in <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/global-community-impact-grants/">Global Community Impact Grants</a> for local non-profit organization Educo Guatemala, which will empower youth and strengthen food security and nutrition&nbsp;in Guatemala’s indigenous communities.

The Starbucks Foundation’s Origin Grants portfolio complements additional programs and initiatives to support the farming community. Starbucks is currently piloting several programs focused on creating income diversification and building childcare centers to support coffee families during harvest.

Regional and local growth

Since opening its first stores in the region in Puerto Rico and Mexico in 2002, Starbucks has seen remarkable growth across LAC and created employment opportunities for over 18,000 partners regionally. For 20 years, the company has worked to innovate, expand and elevate the coffee industry in the region. As Starbucks turns 50, Michelle Burns, who leads coffee at Starbucks, and her team are working to ensure the best outcomes for coffee farmers and the land it’s grown on.

Michelle Burns remembers vividly the trip she took to Colombia in 2018. As the sun broke through the clouds, she trekked into a rugged mountain region in Caldas, one of the country’s main coffee-producing regions – a two-and-a-half-hour ascent up through steep terrain, then down into a valley. There, she and her group were greeted by about 15 local farmers, mostly young people who’d returned home and recently started coffee farming after decades of armed conflicts in the area had subsided.

“They shared their stories with us,” recalls Burns, now Starbucks&nbsp;<a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/leadership/michelle-burns/">executive vice president of Global Coffee, Tea and Cocoa</a>, “stories about conflict and all the challenges that happened in Colombia, stories of moving away after losing family members who were in coffee farming.

“They’d come back to reclaim that land. And we asked them, ‘What can we do to help?’”

The moment – and her subsequent takeaway: “the incredible possibility to positively impact the lives and support the next generation of farmers” – led to the Starbucks Colombia Initiative, called “Granos de Esperanza” (grains of hope), a kind of real-time agricultural and economic innovation lab.

Today, 100 local farmers in Nariño, Colombia are learning the latest climate education, soil and fertilizer analysis techniques and coffee cultivation and business practices. They’re applying innovations gained at Hacienda Alsacia, the Starbucks research farm in Costa Rica. And they’re incorporating new technologies like eco-pulpers that use less water in the coffee-production process.

The moment also widened Burns’ perspective on the bean-to-cup journey and drove home the importance and urgency of making sure that Starbucks is committed to doing the work and making the investments to ensure a sustainable future of coffee for all, especially for those who grow it and the land they work on. &nbsp;

To that end, Starbucks has opened&nbsp;<a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2021/starbucks-opens-farmer-support-center-in-brazil-for-coffee-growing/">10 coffee farmer support centers</a>&nbsp;around the globe, the latest in Brazil; committed to provide 100 million healthy coffee trees to coffee farmers by 2025; provided access to low-interest loans to coffee farmers in regions where traditional banks are not an option; and piloted programs in Guatemala to help coffee-farming families diversify their income streams.

A commitment to take less and give more to the planet

Starbucks has also&nbsp;<a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/stories/2021/starbucks-announces-coffee-specific-environmental-goals/#:~:text=In%202020%20Starbucks%20committed%20to,50%25%2C%20both%20by%202030." target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">set goals</a>&nbsp;to achieve carbon-neutral green coffee and conserve water usage in green coffee processing by 50 percent, both by 2030.

“That is bold,” Burns says. “The effort that needs to happen on methodology and technology and bringing all the pieces together, it’s somewhat uncharted territory. We’re very ambitiously out there, not yet having all the answers, but trying to find the solutions.”

Specifically, Starbucks is focusing on reducing its carbon and water footprints at “the first ten feet” – starting on the farms – and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by equipping farmers with precision agronomy tools, promoting and distributing climate-resistant tree varietals and protecting and restoring at-risk forests in key coffee landscapes.

As part of its water conservation strategy, Starbucks is investing in ecological wet mills that can save up to 80 percent of water in coffee processing. To date, Starbucks has helped install 12,000 such new mills around the world.

“You think about the magnitude of water scarcity around the globe. Are there potential ways to innovate and identify and use equipment that is better for the environment? There are over 200,000 wet mills currently in our supply chain. We’ve only scratched the surface on scaling this technology.

“I am seeing the possibilities, and I get excited about the overall positive impact we can have. I feel the best knowing we’ll never hold this as our own. We’re working with others in the industry, so this work is in service to the entire coffee sector – and hopefully beyond, into the broader agricultural industry – because we’re committed to build on open sources of sharing.”

Burns still has the large handmade red ceramic mug that a fellow partner (employee) gifted her 26 years ago, her first at Starbucks. When it’s cradled in her hands, she feels familiarity and friendship, comfort and warmth. Like so many others who have a coffee ritual, this mug is part of hers.

These days, when she drinks coffee out of this mug, she’s reminded of the need to slow down and savor the moment.

For 50 years, coffee has been the core of Starbucks, and Burns always comes back to that, especially as a highly visible leader during intensely complex times – a climate crisis, crop diseases like coffee rust, a highly charged political landscape, an aging farmer population, supply chain disruptions due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, labor and staffing shortages.

“It is important to stay true to the heart and the mission of our company, and the love for coffee, and your experience with it.

“I believe that by honoring our heritage, staying true to where and why we started as a company – strongly rooted in our mission and values, with an aspiration to make sure that in the end, we’re giving more than we’re taking – then we can really go after the biggest, boldest aspirations.”

That thinking led Starbucks to develop one of the coffee industry’s first ethical sourcing standards,&nbsp;<a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2020/cafe-practices-starbucks-approach-to-ethically-sourcing-coffee/">Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices</a>, a verification program that allows Starbucks to ensure it gets high-quality, ethically sourced coffee while also gaining insights into the challenges faced by farmers and supply chain operations in the more than 30 different coffee-producing countries around the world – and then to share that knowledge back.

C.A.F.E. Practices measures more than 200 criteria – as scored by an independent third-party auditor – in the categories of economic transparency, environmental leadership, social responsibility and quality. Starbucks pays premiums above commercial market price to help ensure coffee farmer profitability, and also financially rewards supply chains that reach the highest performance levels.

That commitment to stay rooted in Starbucks mission and values continues to drive Burns in her work – especially as a woman leading in the coffee industry – whether it’s planet-first initiatives, farmer support or increasing awareness among customers of the entire coffee-making process.

“You just think about the magnitude,” Burns says. “How many hands actually touch the coffee along the way, how many miles are there from a field to one of our stores? It’s incredible… That has to be integrated into all the ways we work, think and act. We work in support of 400,000 farmers, just like we work in support of 400,000 partners.”

Given that Starbucks buys about 800 million pounds of coffee every year, or about 5 percent of the world’s coffee, Burns says, “the potential to positively impact the lives and livelihoods of farmers and their communities is tremendous.

“People have watched us working hard to do the right things, find solutions and take great care of farmers and their communities, for decades. They grant us an amount of trust and opportunity to help lead the discussion around ensuring a sustainable future of coffee for all. That is a privilege as well as a responsibility, but it’s so important that we follow through. “When I think about that challenge, and I look at what is required, and the journey ahead, my sense is, we must. We must be brave, and we must lead, and set out aspirations that are bold to take the path that can create a better future for those that grow coffee and their families, and to ensure that the beauty and art and ritual that’s coffee remains in all of our cultures, for decades and decades to come.”

However, this time not only our partners had the opportunity to participate, but we also invited our clients to be part of this local reforestation effort.&nbsp;

If you bought a reusable cup, you would have contributed half of the resources to plant a tree, while Starbucks donated the rest.&nbsp;

A Cup Can Make a Difference&nbsp;

Ciclobom: giving new life to Starbucks iconic paper cups&nbsp;

For its part, Starbucks Brazil, in collaboration with BO Packaging, Ibema and Green Mining, is launching the Ciclobom recycling campaign in various stores in the country.

Ciclobom is an initiative that seeks to create a complete sustainable cycle for Starbucks paper cups. The idea is to collect all discarded paper cups to later turn them into sleeves for new drinks.&nbsp;

The pilot stage of this project began in 2021 with 14 participating stores, but in 2022 the intention is to expand it to more than 60 stores to expand our reach.&nbsp;

Ciclobom reinforces the sustainability actions that Starbucks Brazil already carries out in the country, such as the use of For Here Ware (ceramic tableware offered for consumption in the store).&nbsp;

For a better future for the world&nbsp;

These actions all across the region are an example of Starbucks' commitment to reducing waste and developing innovative sustainability initiatives in support of our long-term goal of being resource positive.&nbsp;

We know that there’s still a lot to be done, but we firmly believe that every effort to create a better future, big or small, is important, so we will keep on working from our trenches and in partnership with others to continue evolving.&nbsp;

For Herminio Ponce, a member of the Totonacapan Coffee Cooperative in Puebla, growing coffee is not only a means of livelihood, but a family tradition.

“In my town it is customary to receive land when we get married. That is what happened to me, five years ago. This property has fed many generations, so we have to take care of it in the best way”, Herminio explains.

Like Herminio, Máximo Ponce also grows coffee on the slopes of Puebla's Sierra Norte. Like him, all the coffee producers of the Totonacapan Cooperative in Puebla have been in charge for years of transforming the coffee fruit into a cup of the best quality through pulping, fermentation, manual washing and drying of the cherry. Now, after more than twenty years of processing his coffee in an artisanal way, Máximo will discover a new process.

Ecological Wet Mill

The quality of life of more than 9,600 coffee growers that are part of the Puebla Cooperative will improve with the delivery of a machine for the treatment of coffee beans called a collective ecological wet mill, which will increase productivity, quality and profitability, while reducing the environmental footprint generated by coffee cultivation and processing.

Starbucks Mexico, together with the Starbucks Farmer Support Center located in Chiapas, established an alliance with Fondo para la Paz I.A.P. to instal a collective ecological wet mill in the community of the municipality of Zongozotla, Puebla. Fondo para la Paz I.A.P. is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the development and well-being of the country's indigenous communities, increasing the capacities of people to generate their own livelihoods.

"Processing coffee is a manual job that takes around four hours to process a minimum of 4 tons of coffee cherry and uses 10 to 20 liters of water per kilo of coffee parchment," explained Alfredo Nuno, director of Starbucks Farmer Support Centers, where agronomists and quality experts work alongside farmers, sharing tools and information to help increase productivity and the quality of coffee on their farms, with the goal to improve their livelihoods.

“For coffee growers, having access to adequate training to use this ecological coffee wet mill will make coffee processing easier and faster while contributing to the reduction of water usage in green coffee processing,” added Nuno.

“This collective ecological wet mill transforms the coffee cherries that are collected from the plants into beans ready to be roasted. For the coffee growers, having this system means much less physical effort and significantly reduces the use of water,” Alfredo commented.

Towards a more sustainable future for coffee

Along with the delivery of the wet mill, the farmers will receive training from the Starbucks Farmer Support Center in Mexico to use this system: “Now we can take better care of the environment and continue to grow as a community,” expressed Olimpia Gaona, who three years ago inherited a piece of land with old coffee plantations that she has gradually replaced with rust-resistant plants thanks to the support <a href="https://historias.starbucks.com/es/stories/2020/mujeres-que-cultivan-cafe-en-puebla/">of the Cooperative and Starbucks</a>.

The donation of the ecological wet mill is part of Starbucks "Todos Sembramos Café" program, created in Mexico in 2014. Each year, the program donates rust-resistant coffee trees for each bag of coffee beans sold in the country's stores. Last 2021, it delivered 400 thousand coffee trees to the communities of Puebla, Chiapas and Oaxaca.

The success of this program has inspired a similar one in the United States under the name <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2017/starbucks-100million-coffee-trees/">"100 Million Trees Commitment."</a> So far, these programs have donated more than 20 million coffee trees to Mexican producers, including members of the Totonacapan Coffee Cooperative in Puebla.

Community with C for coffee

Founded with 60 members, the Totonacapan Coffee Cooperative in Puebla joined Starbucks C.A.F.E. Practices 2019, which is a program of continuous improvement that seeks to guarantee a more sustainable coffee. With this and other support and training initiatives, the Cooperative will continue to reap the benefits of its alliance with Starbucks.

“I have been in the coffee business for 40 years and I have seen how production has improved in my community with the arrival of the Cooperative. We have received technical advice, monitoring of our plots, relief funds and plant deliveries from Starbucks, which have helped us grow as producers,” said Reynaldo López, a member of the Cooperative for two years.

“I like the whole process, from the sowing to the fertilization and care, but what I enjoy most is savoring a cup and knowing that it was the product of my work and effort. I am glad to know that, somewhere in the world, someone is drinking our coffee and they recognize the quality that we have in Zongozotla”, concluded Reynaldo.

Seattle, WA – The Starbucks Foundation today announced a $30 million investment by 2030 in a new Global Community Impact Grants portfolio designed to drive locally relevant impact in the communities where Starbucks operates around the world. To scale the initiative, The Starbucks Foundation is inviting partner companies (licensees) which operate the Starbucks brand across its three international regions – Asia Pacific; Europe, Middle East &amp; Africa; and Latin America &amp; the Caribbean – to nominate local nonprofit organizations for grants. These grants are intended to fund programs that create meaningful local or regional impact and expands on the company’s people positive ambition to enhance the well-being of all who connect with Starbucks.

For the inaugural round of grants, which will be awarded this April as part of Starbucks 12th annual Global Month of Good, the company’s international licensees nominated over&nbsp;80 local nonprofit organizations&nbsp;from more than&nbsp;40 markets. Grants will be awarded for causes aligned to The&nbsp;Starbucks Foundation’s community impact goals, including youth empowerment, inclusion &amp; diversity, social services, hunger relief,&nbsp;economic opportunity,&nbsp;and coffee-, tea- and cocoa-growing communities.&nbsp;

​As part of the initiative, licensees were&nbsp;encouraged to co-invest with The Starbucks Foundation and leverage other resources, including providing in-kind donations and encouraging Starbucks partners (employees) to volunteer, for&nbsp;greater impact:

GEORGE TOWN, CAYMAN ISLANDS – As part of its continued expansion plans in the market, Starbucks Coffee Company, in partnership with its operating licensee Caribbean Coffee Traders Limited (CCTL), today announced the unveiling of a new store located on the island of Grand Cayman. The store, in the lobby of Monaco Towers, is the second Starbucks in the Cayman Islands.

Starbucks designs its stores to enhance the human connection made over a cup of coffee and to reflect the communities it serves. The new Grand Cayman store features the company’s digital customer experience and will provide a warm and welcoming place for customers to enjoy high-quality arabica coffee and handcrafted beverages. Located at Monaco Towers, a business center in the heart of Grand Cayman, the store will serve as the perfect destination for customers to connect and unwind or enjoy coffee on-the-go. Starbucks designers work hard to create experiences that honour the integrity of the neighbourhoods where stores are located while also ensuring that the evolving needs of customers are met.

Mexico City – Starbucks Mexico – together with the support from Alsea Foundation A.C. – today announced the launch of the new initiative, Donde Come Uno, Comen Dos, to reduce food waste at select Starbucks stores in the market. To ensure unsold items do not go to waste, participating stores will mark down select products by 50% several hours prior to closing. As part of Starbucks ongoing commitment to the fight against hunger, the company will donate revenue from the sales of the products to <a href="https://bamx.org.mx/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://bamx.org.mx/">Bancos de Alimentos de México (BAMX)</a>, a network of 55 food banks working to close the hunger gap by providing nutritious meals to thousands of families across Mexico. &nbsp;

Through the Donde Come Uno, Comen Dos initiative Starbucks Mexico hopes to address food and beverage waste. According to BAMX data, nearly 34% of food produced across Mexico goes to waste, equivalent to 20.4 million tons of food annually with a value of 491 billion pesos.

"Since our arrival in the market 20 years ago, Starbucks Mexico has sought to connect partners (employees), customers and communities through coffee. We also strive to create a positive impact in each neighborhood we serve," said José Luis Portela, CEO of Starbucks Mexico. “Donde Come Uno, Comen Dos is part of our global commitment to fight hunger, reduce food waste and create a better future for our communities and our planet.”

Customers can easily identify the discounted items under Donde Come Uno, Comen Dos by the newly designed MICHAS GRACIAS label that will be affixed to select products – including ready-to-drink beverages, baked goods, packaged food, and grab-and-go items – and can support the initiative by buying the surplus products from 8:00 p.m. until close at participating stores. Starbucks Mexico will donate revenue from the sales of these items to BAMX, which provides over 10,000 families across 27 states in Mexico with food staples including rice, beans, and lentils through their food pantries.

San Juan, PUERTO RICO - Today, Baristas del Caribe, LLC, the operating licensee of Starbucks in Puerto Rico, announced the opening of its first drive-thru only Starbucks store in the market. At 660 square feet, the Starbucks Dorado Express is located near the José de Diego Highway (PR-22) exit on PR-693 Road in Dorado’s Maguayo neighborhood.

“This new store has been designed to provide a unique, convenient, safe and relaxed experience for our customers through the exclusive operation of a drive-thru service. We aim to balance speed and quality while remaining committed to elevating the Starbucks Experience for customers who are on-the-go through this area,” said Idis Ortiz-López, General Manager of Starbucks Puerto Rico.

The drive-thru only format, as its name implies, has been designed to serve our customers primarily through the drive-thru window, with most customer connections through this channel. A walk-up window is also available for customers that choose to park their car, walk-up, and order to go, or utilize our Starbucks Rewards Program.

With the introduction of this new store format, Starbucks is evolving the customer experience to meet Puerto Rican customers' needs of convenience, connection and personalization while creating new and meaningful experiences for them.

Starbucks opened its first Puerto Rico store in San Juan in 2002.&nbsp; This new location marks the 29th store in the market, with approximately 500 partners (employees) proudly wearing the green apron nationwide.

The Starbucks Dorado Express store is the eighth store in Puerto Rico that offers the Nitro method, an innovative process that infuses strained "cold brew" – coffee that is slow-steeped for approximately 20 hours – with nitrogen as it flows from the tap. The result is a velvety-smooth coffee with a subtly sweet flavor and a rich, creamy head of foam.

Starbucks welcomes its customers at the new store between 6:00 am to 10:00 pm daily.
