Mexico City, Mexico – This month, Starbucks is celebrating its 20th anniversary of retail presence in Latin America and the Caribbean – a region equally important to Starbucks future as its coffee heritage is to its legacy. In 2002, the brand opened its first stores in the region, one at Angel de la Independencia in Mexico City, Mexico, and the other in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Today, with 10 trusted licensed operators, Starbucks has expanded its reach to over 1,530 stores across 22 markets, providing economic advancement and employment opportunity to 19,000 green apron partners (employees of the brand’s licensed retail operators).

Starbucks has expanded its reach to over 34,000 stores around the world, with 400,000 green apron partners who proudly wear the Green Apron. International markets drove 80% of Starbucks global development in FY’22 thus far and are expected to continue to fuel the company’s new store growth. Market and channel expansion are therefore paramount to the company’s success, and its aggressive goals are only realized through the contributions and shared values of licensed partners.­

In Mexico – home to over 10,000 green apron partners operating nearly half of Starbucks stores in the region – the brand continues to enhance the Starbucks Experience for customers and partners. To celebrate two decades in the market, Starbucks Mexico released <a href="https://historias.starbucks.com/en-es/press/2022/starbucks-mexico-launches-three-limited-edition-beverages-created-by-partners/">three limited-edition, partner-designed Frappuccino® Blended Beverages</a>, available from September 5 to 18, with a portion of proceeds benefitting Mexican charities dedicated to environmental causes. It also announced the release of its first single-origin whole bean coffee from Veracruz – <a href="https://historias.starbucks.com/en-es/press/2022/starbucks-launches-its-first-single-origin-coffee-from-veracruz/">Starbucks® Las Montañas Veracruz, México</a> – and a 20th Mexico anniversary reusable cup designed by local artists.

Furthermore, to support local coffee growers and <a href="https://historias.starbucks.com/en-es/stories/2022/a-more-sustainable-future-of-coffee-for-all/">ensure a sustainable future of coffee for all</a>, Starbucks Mexico launched its 8th annual <a href="https://historias.starbucks.com/en-es/press/2022/todos-sembramos-cafe-returns-at-starbucks-stores-across-mexico/">Todos Sembramos Café</a> program, where Starbucks donates rust-resistant coffee plants to coffee growers in Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla, and, for the first time this year, Veracruz. This month, The Starbucks Foundation will also award its first-ever Origin Grant in Mexico, focused on supporting women in coffee growing communities. The USD 500,000 grant to <a href="https://www.savethechildren.mx/">Save the Children</a> will support the “Power of Me” program to create economic opportunities and promote resilience for 1,500 women in Puebla's coffee-growing communities through financial and digital literacy skills, entrepreneurship training, and support for women-owned businesses to start, grow and succeed.

Additionally, Starbucks Puerto Rico will re-introduce its popular Starbucks® Single-Origin Puerto Rico whole bean coffee and host the 17th edition of its <a href="https://historias.starbucks.com/en-es/press/2021/starbucks-puerto-rico-celebrates-16-years-of-dont-let-it-fall-initiative-and-strengthens-support-to-local-coffee-growers/">Don’t Let It Fall</a> initiative – a program where Starbucks&nbsp;Puerto Rico&nbsp;baristas/employees support&nbsp; coffee farmers during&nbsp;the&nbsp;busy&nbsp;harvest season&nbsp;by visiting&nbsp;haciendas (local farms)&nbsp;across&nbsp;the island&nbsp;to pick ripened coffee cherries that would otherwise fall and go to waste.

Mexico City - Today, Starbucks announced the introduction of its first single-origin coffee from Veracruz, an eastern state bordering the Gulf of Mexico with a rich and unique coffee heritage. In celebration of the company’s 20th anniversary of retail operations in Mexico, Starbucks® Las Montañas Veracruz will be available in all stores across the market. The coffee will also be on offer to customers across Starbucks stores in the Latin America and Caribbean region from August 22 until early November.

Starbucks® Las Montañas Veracruz, México is grown in the state’s southern mountainous region by Nahua coffee farmers. Coffee was first cultivated in Mexico over 200 years ago, and today Veracruz is one of the market’s largest and most important coffee-growing regions. Each cup of this dark-roasted, single-origin coffee is a tribute to Veracruz’s coffee legacy, featuring notes of piloncillo and toasted almond, with a pinch of cinnamon and a chocolaty body.

“Starbucks has a long history of sourcing and offering unique coffees from Mexico,” said Bibiana Rosique, Marketing Director at Starbucks Mexico. “As we celebrate our 20th anniversary of retail presence in Mexico, we are honored to make a coffee from Veracruz available at Starbucks for the first time.”

Starbucks Mexico’s tribute to Veracruz also includes a limited-edition reusable cup featuring a design inspired by the region’s coffee heritage and natural beauty, ranging from the majestic Pico de Orizaba, Mexico’s highest mountain, to Jarocho coffee plantations set against a striking sunset. The reusable cup will be available in select stores starting August 22.

When purchasing the Veracruz limited-edition reusable cup, customers can order a Grande Espresso Americano made with Veracruz choice espresso at no additional cost. Customers in Mexico already receive an 8-peso discount every time they bring in a reusable cup for their beverage.

The uniqueness of Starbucks® Las Montañas Veracruz, México whole bean coffee is represented in the design of its packaging and the limited-edition reusable cup, specially created by MÚRIC, two Mexican artists who have collaborated with Starbucks for the last 12 years, producing printed graphic materials, paintings and wood art for more than 450 Starbucks stores across Mexico.

“This Veracruz artwork is a tribute to the memories, nature, origins, and enduring need to return to where we first began,” said MURIC team members Mauricio Palacios and Sigrid Blancas. “The landscapes, shapes, and colors used honor the anteater’s struggle. This species returned to the Jarocho coffee plantations after decades of absence. The winter lights and horizon behind Pico de Orizaba showcase the concept of infinity, a landscape that never disappears,” they added.

Starbucks® Las Montañas Veracruz is the company’s fifth Mexican coffee to be offered both within and outside of Mexico. Starbucks started selling its first Mexican coffee in the 1990s, then known as Starbucks Shade Grown Mexico, from the Sierra Madre de Chiapas Mountain range; this variety is now called Chiapas. Starbucks Reserve Finca Nuevo México arrived in 2014, while Starbucks Reserve Mexico Finca Nueva Esperanza arrived in 2016, followed by the last release of Starbucks Mexico Oaxaca in 2021.

As part of Starbucks Mexico’s 20th anniversary celebration, the company will also release a limited-edition merchandise collection, including coffee cups and thermos for cold and hot beverages, a Starbucks card, and a Bearista keychain. The special collection will be available in select stores across the market starting August 29.
