I accept the position of ceo of Starbucks with the deepest of humility. I am thankful to chair Mellody Hobson and the Board of Directors for entrusting me with this responsibility.

Starbucks is an incredible company and its best days are ahead of it. We have a critical role to play in bringing human connection to a world that’s quite disconnected. And in that quest, the best days for you, my partners, are ahead of you.

I met Howard Schultz a year ago in New York City. From that moment, he has been a sensei who has introduced me to the company and to its ways — and the importance of coffee. Throughout my six month immersion journey, Howard has been generous in his advice and guidance, all steeped in ensuring I understood the history of Starbucks and its cherished culture. At one point, someone asked why my immersion was to take six months. I replied that the question was asked with a Western lens. If the question was asked with an Eastern lens, it would be: “Why did the immersion take only six months?”

Howard believes strongly that the partners in this company come first. While there is always more we can do, and will do, the investments set in-place by Howard over the last year have set the table for a new future for the company. He knows — because he came up with it — that in order to exceed the customer expectations, we must first exceed partner expectations. For that, Howard deserves nothing but all the praise and the gratitude.

I know this to be incontrovertibly true, even if some in the world may choose to assert a different view. For Howard, every decision, every idea, and every innovation has to be viewed through the lens of our partners and how it will shape their experience. Take our newest innovation, Oleato- a creation that came from Howard’s mind. While we may all take great pride in the excitement from our customers, Howard’s biggest joy was seeing that partners were energized by the idea, eagerly queuing up to try the product at the Seattle Support Center.

I was at Pike Place last week very early in the morning. It was before the store opened. And then we opened it. There was silence. I walked the store, touching the wood on the shelves. I saw the hook that stood near the entrance that was meant for Caroline, a customer who came there to connect with employees. I saw the shelves — exactly as they were when the store first opened many years ago. The espresso machines slowly turned on. The market began bustling. And soon, lines of customers formed. Customers that craved what Starbucks has to offer.

Think of this. Our business is a human connection business. It’s a human connection business over coffee. It took genius to take Starbucks from 11 stores to 36,000. It took genius to make us the first company that gave out Bean Stock. It took genius to lead on healthcare and benefits — including our transgender healthcare. It took genius to be the first company in China to provide benefits no other company had. It took genius to coin the phrase “performance through the lens of humanity”.

And it took 40 years of work. Of inspiration. Of struggles. Of doing the right thing even when no one thought it to be the case. And it took the genius of the individual coupled with the symphony of thousands of partners to create the magic of Starbucks. And that is the foundation of the limitless future that I know we will enjoy as a brand. A brand that our partners make special, every day.

And as Howard leaves, let me repeat what I said in our town hall. He will always be our founder. We will always honor him.

SEATTLE – Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) announced, effective today, Laxman Narasimhan has assumed the role of chief executive officer and will join the company’s board of directors. Following the global search for the new leader of Starbucks, Narasimhan joined the company as incoming ceo on October 1, 2022, bringing nearly <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/leadership/laxman-narasimhan/">30 years of experience</a> leading global consumer goods businesses and advising retail, grocery, restaurant and e-commerce companies. Over the past five months, he has embarked on a unique immersion experience, traveling to work with partners (employees) in over 30 stores, manufacturing plants and in support centers around the world, earning his barista certification along the way. He became immersed in the reinvention plans for the company led by Schultz who returned as interim ceo effective April 4, 2022.

Since Schultz returned last year, Starbucks unveiled a company-wide reinvention strategy and continued to deliver on more than $1 billion in investments in retail partners and stores for prioritized areas such as increased pay and sick time accrual, new financial well-being benefits, modernized training and collaboration, store innovation and equipment and the celebration of coffee.&nbsp;The company saw a 47 percent stock price increase since the Q2 FY22 earnings call through the Q1 FY23 earnings call, and market cap growth of approximately $40 billion during that same time. The company also delivered 50 percent in Total Shareholder Return in this time period, far outpacing the S&amp;P 500.&nbsp;Starbucks was also most recently named the most valuable restaurant brand for the 7th consecutive year by <a href="https://brandirectory.com/rankings/restaurants/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brand Finance</a>.

Narasimhan officially assumes the role of chief executive officer today and will lead Starbucks Annual Shareholder Meeting this Thursday, March 23. As I step down as interim ceo of Starbucks, I am leaving you with this letter, written on the sunset of my last day as ceo for all of you to read on the morning of this new era. This is not a letter with advice. Everything you need to know resides inside of each of you.

What I want to write to you about is the love and responsibility for our company that we all share. Today, I am entrusting you all with Starbucks – something that holds a place in my heart second only to that of my beloved family.

Starbucks truly has been my life‘s work – but more than that, it’s always been about the lives of the millions of partners over the years who have proudly worn the green apron and it’s about the hundreds of thousands more who will join Starbucks in the years to come. It’s about every customer who comes through our doors. It’s about the communities our stores call home. Our company is like a river – the stewards of it will change over time, but it’s always growing and changing, carving a new path and moving forward to something better.

As I step away, I leave you all as the stewards, in service of all of our partners. They are the heart and soul of our company – the living embodiment of human connection. Through the years, I’ve seen over and over the profound impact our partners have on our customers, from a new parent whose first outing is to a Starbucks to introduce their baby to their favorite barista, to a store where partners learned sign language to better serve a deaf customer, to a widower who said that when he goes to his Starbucks, it may be the only time all week someone greets him by name. Our partners are making a difference in millions of lives a day. Serve them well.

I want to acknowledge that there are times when the responsibility for our partners, customers and communities around the world will feel heavy. But as partners, know that you are not shouldering the responsibility alone. And, importantly, lean into the joy. There is so much joy. Every single interaction that we have as partners and that we have with customers is an opportunity for meaningful connection. It adds up to a limitless capacity for joy, love and support, with the center being Starbucks. Remember that.

San Juan, Puerto Rico - Baristas del Caribe, LLC. (BDC), the operating licensee of Starbucks in Puerto Rico, today announced the return of the iconic coffee brand to Isla Verde -a popular tourist destination- with the reopening of a store in the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel.&nbsp; Additionally, Starbucks is expanding to a new city in the northern zone of the island, with a new drive-thru store on the PR-2 Road in the municipality of Hatillo at the end of March.

The reopening of the store at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel and Hatillo store required an investment of nearly $2 million.&nbsp; The openings create 38 new jobs between the two locations.

As part of Starbucks Reinvention plans, the new stores feature innovations in technology that benefit both customers and partners (employees).&nbsp; The stores feature a new coffee machine technology, known as the Mastrena 2.0.

“The introduction of Mastrena 2.0 in our new stores allows Starbucks partners to make high-quality handcrafted espresso beverages with speed and precision. It allows our partners to better interact with our customers offering the opportunity for partners to carry out tastings and informational seminars.&nbsp; Providing customers with samplings of fresh, espresso coffee profiles creates a greater opportunity for connection and exchange of knowledge with Starbucks customers, which translates into a unique and enduring experience for our regular visitors,” stated Idis Ortiz-López, general manager of Starbucks in Puerto Rico.

The new stores also feature the Starbucks Grounds For Your Garden initiative, which offers customers free bags of used coffee grounds to take home and use as a green compost or fertilizer alternative.&nbsp; As is customary, each store will identify community organizations in their area with which they will be collaborating and offering volunteer service.

The Fairmont El San Juan Hotel and Hatillo stores will operate from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, daily.

Seattle, WA – Starbucks Coffee Company, in partnership with Prestige Holdings Ltd, today announced its plans to open the first Starbucks store in Guyana this April. The new location will open at the&nbsp;Amazonia Mall near&nbsp;Guyana’s capital city of Georgetown and will welcome local customers with signature handcrafted coffee beverages prepared by passionate green apron baristas.

Guyana will be Starbucks 23rd&nbsp;market in Latin America and the Caribbean and 85th&nbsp;market globally, demonstrating the company’s long-term commitment to and investment in the region where it expects to&nbsp;open approximately 120 additional new stores by the end of the year. Last week, Starbucks achieved its&nbsp;<a href="https://historias.starbucks.com/en-es/press/2023/starbucks-opens-first-drive-thru-store-in-dominican-republic-with-expansion-to-punta-cana/">1,600th&nbsp;store milestone</a>&nbsp;in the region,&nbsp;providing&nbsp;employment opportunities for over 22,000 green apron partners (employees).

The new location in Guyana will be operated by Prestige Holdings, Starbucks trusted licensed business operator, which has managed the brand’s locations in Trinidad &amp; Tobago for more than seven years. The new licensing agreement for Guyana will leverage Prestige Holdings’ industry expertise, coffee passion, and deep understanding of the Starbucks brand and Mission &amp; Values.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic – Starbucks – operated by local business operator Green Star Partners in the Dominican Republic – today announced the opening of its first store in Punta Cana. The store, located at Blue Mall Punta Cana in the heart of the Caribbean tourist destination, marks Starbucks 1,600th store in Latin American and Caribbean and its first drive-thru store in the Dominican Republic, underscoring the company’s commitment to continued regional expansion and its efforts to diversify its store portfolio to meet customers’ needs for convenience, connection, and personalization.

With this new store, Starbucks aims to balance speed and quality while differentiating the customer experience. Located at the entrance to Blue Mall Punta Cana on at Blvd. Turístico del Este, the drive-thru store is specially designed to provide a unique on-the-go experience in a safe and familiar way. Customers will be able to enjoy high-quality, arabica coffee and handcrafted espresso-based beverages made by passionate baristas, along with a wide assortment of exclusive products, fresh food items, and whole bean coffees, including Starbucks Dominican Republic single-origin coffee. The new location marks Starbucks sixth store in the Dominican Republic and will provide employment opportunity to 18 partners (employees) in Punta Cana, with approximately 100 partners proudly wearing the green apron nationwide.

Starbucks store designers are creating experiences that not only meet the evolving needs customers have around the world, but that also honor the neighborhoods where the company operates. The new Punta Cana drive-thru store was designed and constructed to represent the local culture and facilitate the active lifestyles of the Caribbean coast. Built with native materials from the region, such as "cana" (from the palms that abound in the area) and coral stone, the store embodies tropical freshness and exhibits a Caribbean chic style representative of the local culture and environment.

The brand’s iconic image seamlessly combines with local design features throughout the store, such as a miniature garden constructed behind the sidewalk in front of the store. Developed in conjunction with local curators, the garden exhibits the colors, textures and smells of wild gardens found in local Caribbean fields. The store’s furniture was designed and built by Dominican artisans who used authentic, ethically sourced materials in their work, connecting customers with the local surroundings.

The 154m2 store also features murals painted by local artist, Ivanna Candelier, telling the story of Starbucks bond with the Dominican land, the local people, and the magic of the coffee bean. Her pieces feature the mystical siren, emblematic of the Starbucks brand, with an additional element of the birth and transformation of a coffee bean inspired by Dominican identity, exhibited through details including dance of the flowers and dew of the mountains motifs that act as protagonists in her artistic creation.

“I grew up listening to the stories of my grandmother, my mother, and their sisters in the field. My family comes from the heart of San Francisco de Macoris, where they grew coffee most of their lives. Imagining their stories with the same innocence with which they lived them is the inspiration for this series of illustrations called Offerings of the Land,” explained Candelier.

The drive-thru store is located at the entrance to Blue Mall Punta Cana at the Blvd. Turístico del Este and serves customers from 7 A M to 10 P M.

Mexico City – In recognition of International Women's Day, The Starbucks Foundation – together with Save the Children – today celebrates the launch of an economic empowerment program for indigenous women in Puebla, Mexico. The program, locally known as The Power in Me (“El Poder que hay en Mí”) and funded through an Origin Grant from The Starbucks Foundation, will create economic opportunities and promote resilience for 1,500 women in Puebla’s coffee growing communities. During the 24-month program, women in Puebla will benefit from financial and digital literacy courses, entrepreneurship training, and support for women-owned businesses to start, grow and succeed.

“Last year, The Starbucks Foundation <a href="https://stories.starbucks.com/press/2022/the-starbucks-foundation-commits-to-uplift-one-million-women-and-girls-in-origin-communities-by-2030/">announced</a> a new goal to positively impact 1 million women and girls in coffee-, tea- and cocoa-growing communities by 2030, and we are excited to see this come to life in Mexico with the launch of The Power in Me program in Puebla. With support from the Origin Grant, Save the Children will work with women from Cuetzalan del Progreso, Huauchinango, Huitzilan de Serdán, Xicotepec and Zongozotla de Juárez to develop socio-emotional skills, financial education and digital skills and apply them to their own businesses. Through a community-based approach, Save the Children will engage local community members to identify opportunities and co-design the program, to ensure the plan considers local context and cultural traditions. By helping to reduce economic and digital access gaps, participating women will have a significantly higher likelihood of breaking the cycle of poverty, helping to build resilience for participants, their families and the community as a whole.

“Women are an engine of change who deserve greater opportunities,” shared Maripina Menéndez, CEO of Save the Children in Mexico. “Save the Children believes success is when women are recognized in the community for their role in economic development, acquire the necessary skills to run successful businesses and have sufficiently strong support networks to draw on. Sao Paulo – As part of its ongoing expansion strategy in the market, SouthRock – the licensed retail operator of Starbucks stores in Brazil – today announced the opening of the first Starbucks store in the state of Bahia. Located in Shopping da Bahia, in Salvador—the state’s capital—the store celebrates the siren’s arrival to Brazil’s northeast region and the beginning of an exciting 2023 growth agenda underscoring the company’s­­­­ efforts to bring the Starbucks Experience to even more customers throughout the market. A second Salvador store, in Shopping Barra, is expected to open in the first half of 2023, and the brand will continue to expand up the Atlantic coast, <a href="https://historias.starbucks.com/br/press/2023/starbucks-brasil-anuncia-expansao-para-tres-novos-estados-em-2023/">entering the states of Pernambuco (Recife) and Ceara (Fortaleza</a>) this year.

Starbucks has sourced coffee from Bahia for over a decade, and uses high-quality, arabica beans from Bahia in a variety of coffees the brand produces, most notably Starbucks® Brasil Blend, a coffee specially designed for the Brazilian taste, which also includes beans from Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo states. Developed in 2006 when Starbucks first entered the market, Starbucks® Brasil Blend is a regular whole bean coffee in stores across Brazil and has become a global success story, now exported to markets across the world.

The two new Salvador stores will feature cozy, comfortable environments for customers to enjoy coffees from Brazil and around the world, along with seasonal and year-round beverages and menu items prepared by passionate baristas according to customers’ preferences. In addition to Starbucks® Brasil Blend, the store menu options include several products specifically created for Brazilian customers, such as Starbucks Brigadeiro Frappuccino® Blended Beverage and an exclusive recipe for the traditional pão de queijo, one of the region’s most popular bakery items.

With this opening, Starbucks Brazil provides customers with a place where they can meet and connect with family and friends over coffee and enjoy the best of the Starbucks Experience, which includes delicious, ethically sourced coffee, service from experienced baristas, constant innovation in products and services, and a welcoming environment for all.

Customers visiting the new stores will also have access to the Starbucks Rewards™ loyalty program, which offers exclusive benefits to its members. As one of the program perks, for every R$ 3.50 spent on Starbucks menu items and merchandise, Starbucks Rewards members will receive a star to collect and exchange for store items. All store orders, including beverage customizations, can be made using the Starbucks Brazil app.

POSITIVELY IMPACTING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY<s></s>

With the arrival of Starbucks in Bahia, around 60 new direct jobs will be created for the local community. To further support and provide opportunities for community members, in the neighborhoods Starbucks serves, Starbucks Brazil has partnered with Pracatum Social Action Association (<a href="http://www.pracatum.org.br/">Associação Pracatum</a>) and Senac Bahia (National Service For Commercial Education) to offer barista and waitering course. Initially, the partnership will train 20 youth and adults from the Candeal community – one of the oldest and most impoverished neighborhoods of Salvador. After completing the training, participants will be referred to fill open positions at Starbucks stores in Salvador. Any program graduates that do not receive an immediate job offer will have their registration and profile made available in Starbucks Brazil’s opportunity bank and at Senac Bahia.

Created in 1994, by artist Carlinhos Brown, the Pracatum Social Action Association, is a non-profit organization that conducts educational, cultural and community development programs at Candeal, in Salvador, Bahia. Pracatum seeks to strengthen the community through projects focused on the growth of its neighborhoods and professionalization of its residents. The activities promoted by Pracatum are divided into two main programs: Tá Rebocado - Community Development Program and Pracatum - Music, Education and Culture Program.

To further support green apron partners, Starbucks Brazil will also bring the &nbsp;<a href="https://historias.starbucks.com/br/press/2023/starbucks-brasil-promove-a-4a-edicao-do-projeto-eu-sou-em-celebracao-ao-dia-nacional-da-visibilidade-trans/">"I Am" project</a> to Bahia, which offers legal and emotional well-being support for transgender partners to amend their names and genders on their birth certificates. Since its launch in 2020, the project has transformed the lives of more than 100 people in Brazil, supporting partners in stores, corporate offices and other businesses operated by SouthRock in Brazil, as well as members of partner NGOs. The 2023 edition of the project marked a record number of partners registered from Brazilian states where Starbucks currently has a presence.

The relationship with Bahia expands beyond the shared love of good coffee. Panama -- As part of its continued expansion plans in the market, Caribbean Coffee Traders Limited, Starbucks operating licensee in Panama, today announced that more customers can enjoy the Starbucks Experience in a new store located in the town of Coronado. The new drive-thru store, located on Vía Interamericana, Corregimiento de Las Lajas just minutes from the Coronado Beach, marks the 15th Starbucks store opening in Panama.

With the &nbsp;new drive-thru opening, Starbucks reinforces its commitment to meeting the evolving Panamanian customer needs of convenience, connection and personalization. The drive-thru format aims to balance speed and quality of time to create an unmatched customer experience.

“This opening brings great joy to all who represent Starbucks Panama. Our new store reinforces Starbucks &nbsp;commitment to and investment in Panama, marked by continued expansion and new cafés &nbsp;that provide job opportunities for our local communities while further satisfying our customers’ growing demand for premium coffee on-the-go,” said Sofia Moreno, Starbucks Panama country manager.

In addition to the milestone opening of Starbucks Panama’s 15th store, the company recently opened another drive-thru store in Villa Lucre, located in José Domingo Espinar in the district of San Miguelito.
